Laveen was first established by cotton, corn and alfalfa farmers and given its name by their first Postmaster Walter Laveen in the early 1900′s. Dairy farmers also found this land attractive and set up near the mountain as well. Before the construction of Roosevelt Dam in 1911 Laveen was isolated from Phoenix by the Salt River which at the time was flowing uncontrolled. During this period Central Ave. was the only bridge crossing the Salt River and the only way to get to Laveen. The young Laveen although small had everything people needed. A Post Office, General Store, Blacksmith and Cotton gin made this isolated town pretty self sufficient.
